Rs 125 crore to save Mithi

The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has prepared a blueprint to save Mithi river.

The project at a cost of Rs 125 crore would be completed in 2007.

During the last July 26 deluge, Mithi river was flooded due to encroachments along its bank. The same would be brought back in its original form and beautified very soon, said MMRDA official.

The first phase of this ambitious project will start off by March 2006 and end by June because of the onset of monsoon.

The project will restart after the monsoon and will last till the year 2007.

The blueprint of this project is ready which will soon be' implemented. We have also invited tenders for the project. He continued saying that three contractors would be appointed in the first phase of the project and four contractors in the, second phase" till the completion of the project. Nodal officers would also be appointed to have Detter co-ordination between the contractors and MMRDA officials. While developing the banks of Mithi river, encroachments will be deal with iron hand.

"We will have to remove several trees, for which the necessary NOGs have been obtained from the Forest Department", the official said. Very soon Mumbaikar's can see Mithi river flowing in its natural form, once the project is completed.
