Khatmandu: A number of organizations, including university teachers and journalists, will join the seven party alliance to participate in the 'Black Day' being observed on 1st Feb, the first anniversary of royal take over and suspension of civil liberties in Nepal.

Nepal University Teachers' Association (NUTA) will observe a "pen down" on Wednesday across colleges in the country to demand "academic freedom, democracy and fundamental rights."

The university teachers will go to the campuses tying black bands on their wrists as sign of protest but will not take classes, NUTA said in a statement.

The Association has also demanded release of university teachers including Vice-President Shiva Chandra Mishra and former President Bhimsen Das Pradhan, who were arrested in connection with recent pro-democracy rallies.

Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) and Human Rights Organisation of Nepal (HURON) have decided to hold separate rallies to mark the day as black day for restricting press freedom and suspending human rights.

FNJ President Bishnu Nisthuri said that they would mark 1st February as black day as press freedom was snatched and censorship was imposed on that day.
