Maharashtra may be able to tide overs its power crisis atleast this year. The State will start getting 740 MW power from Dabhol power project from May this year.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Prithviraj Chavan said he was leaving for Oman for a possible tie-up of gas supply for the Dabhol project to meet the deadline of re-starting power production in May this year.
Chavan said that initially the government was looking for supply of 0.7 million tonnes of gas per annum for the plant. Initially the Dabhol project will require 0.7 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and later 2.1 MMTPA when it goes upstream with trie second phase he said. However, he did not specify the price at which the gas is being procured. In case the gas supply was not available the plant may be run on liquid fuel. Chavan said it has stocks of liquid fuel up to 32,000 kilo litres, which should suffice to run for at least one to one-and-a-half months at the peak level.
The Minister also said a 4,000 MW power project was soon coming up near Dabhol in Maharashtra. The Power Ministry has asked Ratnagiri Gas and Power Private Ltd (RGPPL) to start first block of 740 MW by May in order to give necessary relief to Maharashtra, reeling under a daily power shortfall of 4200 MW.
