Buniyaad, the timeless serial of the late eightees is going to resurrect 'itself after a gap of twenty years on Sahara One from 26th January. So brace yourself for the pristine romance of Haveli Ram and Lajoji as they gracefully go through the various stages of life with a carefully crafted ease. With Buniyaad, writer Manohar Shyam Joshi had successfully captured the angst of the partition, while director Ramesh Sippy had reinvented himself after making big budget celluloid dreams like Sholay, Shakti and Shaan.
In the era when Doordarshan was the only channel, the home-entertainment starved audience used to lap up each and every episode of Buniyaad with immense excitement. The 9 p.m. slot on Tuesdays and Thursdays were booked for a family huddle. It will also prove to be a lesson for the modern day serials as to what is the ideal way to have an effortless generation leap of twenty years. This seriai also gave many new faces to the film and television industry.
Lesser known actors like Alok Nath, Anita Kanwar, Mazhar Khan, Vijeyndra Ghatge, Kanwaljeet Singh, Kiran Juneja, Kruttika Desai, Neena Gupta and Sudhir Pandey went on to become stars in their own right. Kiran Juenja, who had come for the audition dressed in a skirt, not only went on to do the seriously homely role of Veeranwaali, she also ended up marrying director Ramesh Sippy.
The producers of the show are claiming that the older version of Buniyaad is going to be presented with some technical upgradation. But, the purists fear that the original flavour and the earthy look should not have been tampered with. The serial will be aired at 8 p.m. from Monday to Saturday. Now, in our opinion, the prime time of 9'o clock might have been better as it enjoys a larger family audience. Moreover, an overdose (Six times a week) might be a bit too much to handle in an era of shorter time spans. And maybe, Ramesh Sippy should have opted for a more in-the-face entertainment channel as the TRP ratings of Sahara One is relatively quite less. They couldn't salvage a good serial like Karishma-The Miracles of Destiny in spite of a good storyline and big Bollywood names. As of now, anyone who has seen Buniyaad before must be looking forward to it. But whether this old wine finds fresh takers...Only time will tell.
