BEST in the red

For decades red has been the BEST livery. And red is the predominant colour on the balance sheet of the undertaking's transport arm.
According to an audit of the undertaking for 2004-05, BEST loses money on 99 per cent of its routes (349 out of 353). That's 20% worse than in previous years when at least five routes were profitable! This year, only four routes have made a profit.

With the roads occupied by autorickshaws and taxis, and nearly 100 private cars being added to the roads daily, there's little hope for the big red buses that are the city's lifeline.

The price of diesel has also been rising and BEST buses have a poor fuel economy of less than 3km/litre.
