For the first time, Mumbai police has used its web
site for a public relations clarification. Anti-Terrorist
Squad (ATS) has retaliated to the charges leveled by
the extradited gangster Abu Salem.
The usual police practice is to issued Press releases
to media. Joint Police Commissioner, Anti-Terrorist
Squad (ATS), K.P. Raghuvanshi stated that the idea was
to let everybody, including common people, logging the
site to know the facts. To quote police, "Abu Salem
is a compulsive liar. His polygraph test showed deception
in more than 90 percent questions. While in custody
of ATS, Abu Salem was produced more than six times before
various judicial authorities and was questioned by them,
even in camera. His lawyers would meet him evey single
day in complete privacy, and as per the guidelines given
by Supreme Court of India and National Human Rights
Commission. His through physical check was conducted
every 48 hours. He never complained of maltreatment.
The allegations are surely tutored and afterthought."
The Police added that, "Anti-Terrorism Squad,
Maharashtra is committed to professionalism and upkeep
of human rights of all the accused under its custody.
It believes in proper scientific investigation and is
opposed to illegal and unethical ways."
Salem, who was remanded to ATS custody till January
17, startled a special designated TADA court on Thursday,
when he alleged physical torture by ATS, saying that
ATS officials used to beat him with leather belts.
