Abu Salem has made a complaint to the TADA court claiming
that his confession was extracted under duress and that
he has been physically tortured by the Anti-Terrorist
Squad of the Mumbai police.
Abu Salem was sent to ATS custody till 17th January
and is being questioned by the ATS and CBI here in Mumbai
for his alleged involvement in the Mumbai blasts case
if 1993. He is also believed to be behind the murder
of builder Pradeep Jain.
Abu Salem told judge P. V. Bavkar that he was beaten
with a belt and had fainted on one occasion. He was
afraid that he would be tortured and added that he was
not allowed to meet his lawyers.
Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam rejected his
statements and described this as Salem's cleaverness.
He said Salem was alleging third degree torture because
of the information that the Anti Terrorist Squad got
from him with the lie detector and narco-analysis tests.
Defence lawyer Ashok Sarogi said Salem was being tortured
and he was admitted to hospital for a day. Defence lawyer
Harjot Singh, speaking to the media said third degree
methods were a violation of the extradition treaty
