Pneumonia, not flu: Experts

Mumbai: More than 200 migratory visitors were found dead in a lake at Gandheli, 10 km from Aurangabad. The deputy commissioner of Animal Husbandry, Dr J M Doiphale said that the samples of dead birds were sent to State laboratory in Pune and national laboratory in Bhopal.

The department has collected water samples and also sent live birds to both the laboratories. He said "We have performed the post-mortem on a few birds in our laboratory, which has confirmed that they died of pneumonia. - Only two species of birds including Red Shock and Green Shock have been dying for the last many days. On Thursday, the residents of Gandheli observed this and informed the department", said Doiphale. He also said that preliminary investigations revealed that these birds were not affected by bird flu. When contacted local bird watcher Dilip Yardi, he said at this stage it is will be too early to say anything because samples' of the dead birds were sent to the government laboratories. Yardi also confirmed that the only species of the birds including Red Shock and Green Shock were dying. He further said that the bird might have died due to poisoning
