Mumbai: The Byculla Police arrested the nephew of absconding underworld Kingpin Dawood Ibrahim on charges of extortion and forceful confinement.

According to the police, Samir Wagle, son of Dawood's sister Shahida and and a businessman, was arrested from his residence at Nawab Tank Road . Later, he was produced at the Mazgaon Court . He was remanded to police custody till Friday.

Two brothers Mohammed Zaki Khan and, Mohammed Taki Khan, who own a chicken and meat shop at Mazgaon Docks, near BMC Market had borrowed Rs 2.8 lakh from one Sharafat Solkar and had promised to return the amount in monthly instalments.

Of this, 1.80 lakh was given in cash, whereas the remaining amount was paid through cheque.

According to police inspector Abhay Saigaonkar, who is investigating the case, Khan though paid the first five instalments of Rs 25,000 each, later on he defaulted on payment.

The matter was taken to Samir Wagle for settlement; who then forcibly asked the Khan brothers to return and also dropped his uncle Dawood's name.

Wagle then asked his accomplices to lock Zaki and Taki Khan in different rooms and tried to take their signatures on documents forcibly, to transfer the chicken shop papers in his name in lieu of the outstanding money.

However, the Khans refused the offer. The two were kept incommunicado. However, Taki somehow managed to call the police control room from his cell phone. The police raided the place and rescued them. Four people were arrested by the police on Sunday and were remanded to police custody till Friday. On further investigations, the arrested persons revealed that they were working for Samir Wagle, who was then arrested by the Byculla police on Wednesday.

The police has, however, not found any criminal link between Samir and his maternal uncle, Dawood Ibrahim.
