Mumbai: Amidst tight security, the stage is set for by-polls in Naigaum and Srivard-han assembly constituencies in Mumbai and Raigad district on Thursday.
The bypoll in these constituencies was necessitated by the resignation by sitting Shiv Sena legislators Shyam Sawant (Shrivardhan) and Kalidas Kolambkar (Naigaum), who joined Congress along with Revenue minister Narayan Rane.
Sawant will take on Tukaram Surve of the Shiv Sena, while Kalidas Kolambkar will take on corporator Shraddha Jadhav of Sena. Rane won the Malwan assembly bypoll and three more Sena MLAs who resigned in his support also won the bypolls held recently.
In view of the high stakes involved, adequate security arrangements have been made to ensure peaceful bypolls, State chief electoral officer UPS Madan told newspersons on Wednesday.
His reference was to last month's assembly by-poll results in Konkan where Sena candidates lost all the three seats to nominees of former Senaman Narayan Rane. In Thursday's elections also, Sena nominees Shraddha Jadhav (Naigaum) and Tukaram Surve (Shrivardhan) are pitted against Rane supporters Kalidas Kolambkar and Shyam Saawant respectively.
