Kirit Somaiya, former MP and president of 'Save Mithi River Parishad', while addressing a meeting at Kurla recently, lambasted the State Government for not taking initiative to restore Mithi river. After the July 26 deluge last year, the State Government had decided to develop Mithi river, which was the main reason of flooding in Mumbai due to encroachments and unauthorized constructions in and around the banks of the river.

However till date the government has not taken any concrete steps in this direction and the monsoon is just a few months away, said Kirit Somaiya. The Parishad was organized by the State unit of BJP. Somaiya further said that there are around 25,000 slum dwellers on the bank of Mithi and need to be rehabilitated before the onset of monsoon.

He has also demanded that while developing the Mithi river, the State Government should declare the concerned people staying in the slums as project affected and place them in MMRDA constructed houses specially meant for PAP.

Till now MMRDA has built 2000 houses and the same could be utilized for housing 1200 people.
