The anniversary of Babri Masjid Demolition brought the bad news to (former) BJP MP, former cricketer, Commentator and talk show host Navjot Singh Sidhu. The Punjab and Haryana High Court annonunced a jail term of 3 years after convicting him on last Friday of culpable homicide not amounting to murder for causing the death of 65-year-old Gurnam Singh in Patiala in a road rage case in 1988.
Sidhu's lawyers had pleaded leniency calling it `an unintentional crime`.
The defence lawyers also pleaded that Sidhu be allowed time to appeal against his conviction before the Supreme Court.
Sidhu was present in the court along with senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former central minister Arun Jaitley and a battery of lawyers from New Delhi and Chandigarh . If he was worried, which is quite likely, he successfully camouflaged
it with a ready smile and his style.
'I am here to submit myself before the majesty (court). I am ready for everything,' Sidhu had told reporters before arriving at the court. The courtroom was full of lawyers, media persons, supporters of Sidhu and others. Hundreds of people and media persons thronged the high court for the high profile hearing. Sidhu's friend R.S. Sandhu was also convicted for the same offence.
