Residents of Mumbai will have to deal with an unprecedented complete water shutdown from 10 am today, to 10 am tomorrow, Thursday. Most societies in the city have been storing water to deal with this situation that will last for a day.The cut in supply will be so that new pipelines can be laid to increase the water supply to the city. This plan had been on the anvil for a year now. The authorities had been contemplating steps that could help upgrade the city's water supply without having it shut it down for a day. Eventually since this seemed impossible, the water cut for a day has been executed.

It's a cut that according to civic officials though unprecedented is crucial as part of its III A Mumbai water supply project.

The plan is that after the water supply is cut off, new pipelines from the Bhatsa dam will be patched to the existing pipelines increasing the total capacity.

Currently Mumbai uses 3.2 billion litres of water everyday but the demand is considerably higher. This project will supply an additional 150 million litres per day from February.

While only three of the seven pipelines to the city are part of this plan, all seven have nevertheless been shut down.

"If we take water from other sources then the water pressure will not be good enough to supply to the entire city. So, we decided cut it off completely," Johnny Joseph, BMC Commissioner explained.
