Girl hangs self after failing to get college admission

New Delhi, July 1 (IANS) An 18-year-old girl allegedly hanged herself after she failed to secure admission to a college in the second cut-off list released by Delhi University, police said Wednesday.

The victim, identified as Prachi Gaur, hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her first-floor house in Kondli area in east Delhi around 8.30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Prachi, who had secured 76 percent marks in Class 12, was alone in the room and her parents noticed her hanging from the ceiling half an hour later, they said.

They brought her down and took her to a private nursing home where she was declared dead. Prachi, who had passed her Class 12 examinations from the Rajkiya Sarvodya Vidyalya in Vinod Nagar area, was the second of Gopal Das's four daughters. "She was tense about her admission to Delhi University. She failed to secure (a seat) in the second admission list released in the morning (Tuesday) as she fell short of the qualifying marks," said Gopal Das.

"We cannot think of any other reason behind her extreme step," said Das, who runs a provisional store on the ground floor of his house. According to her family, she wanted to pursue journalism and make a career in electronic media.

"She was dreaming of becoming a news anchor. For now, she'd applied for admission to a BA course with the Vivekanand Mahila College in Anand Vihar along with

two of her friends. But what made her more depressed about her performance was the fact that her friends got their names in the second cut off yesterday," said Prachi's elder sister Sangeeta.

Police said no suicide note had been recovered.
