Pay your tax: BMC tells Thackeray

- By Parinda News Bureau, April 17, 2006, 11:00 IST

Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray must have been taken by surprise as the Brihnmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) served him a notice for defaulting on property tax.

The corporation gets more than Rs 800 crores as property tax from Mumbaikars every year. But now, it has found that Sena supreme is one amongst hundreds of housing societies and slum colonies that default on tax payment.

The BMC is dominated by Shiv Sena which is the largest single party in the 227-member general body with 102 corporators of the total. The corporation has certainly landed up in an embarrassing situation with the main party' leader featuring in defaulters list.

BMC has served a demand notice for Rs 1.07 lakh as tax for Matoshree, the Thackeray family's three-storey bungalow in Kala Nagar in Bandra East.

According to the collector department records of BMC, Thackeray has not paid the property tax for the period October-March 2006, and hence the department has sent him a reminder. However, Prakash Sawant, Sena corporator from the Kala Nagar area, denied a notice was served to Matoshree. He added, “Last year, there was some delay in payment because of elections but we have paid all the dues. The question of a notice being served on Thackeray does not arise since there are no dues pending."

Moreover, senior BMC officials were clueless about the action initiated by the department at the ward level.
