Twin blasts rock Delhi 's Jama Masjid

Two explosions rocked the historic Jama Masjid in Old Delhi on Friday evening, injuring more than 12 people, one of whom is in serious condition.

Immediately after the blasts, a nationwide alert was sounded. The first blast took place around 5.20 pm , followed by another one a few minutes later, near Wazookhana, which consists of a pond where worshipers wash their hands and feet before offering prayers in the 17th century old courtyard of the mosque. The explosions left black patches and bloodstains near the pond. Women and children were among those wounded in the blasts.

The injured were admitted to LNJP Hospital .

According to the Delhi Police, the blasts were triggered by crude explosives packed with shrapnel, potassium chlorate and sulphuric acid.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has announced compensation to those injured in the blasts.
