Salman Khan gets five years in jail

Superstar Salman Khan was today convicted in the the 1998 black buck poaching case and sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment. Salman Khan was sent to the Central Jail in Jodhpur by a local court.

A fine of Rs.25,000 was also imposed on Salman Khan by the Chief Judicial Magistrate Brijendra Kumar Jain. Salman Khan was taken into custody and sent to jail.

The co-accused Govardhan Singh has also been sentenced to one year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.5,000 has been imposed on him. Four other persons have been acquitted. Seven other accused including comedian Satish Shah have been acquitted earlier in this case.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate had rejected Salman Khan's application last week for summoning Harish Dulani, a witness who was missing from court since years. Dulani turned hostile and retracted his earlier statement in which he said he had seen Salman killing the black buck.

Salman is charged with similar crimes in four cases and was earlier given a one year sentence by the same court on February 17 for killing an endangered animal. The the sentence was suspended for a month so he could appeal. Actors Saif Ali Khan, Neelam, Tabbu and Sonali Bendre are co-accused in other cases of poaching. Salman Khan and his lawyers are expected to appeal.
