Smita Patil

Smita began her career as a news reader. She was educated in a Marathi medium school and her parents also enrolled her in the social serving Seva Dal .She opted out of some films in order to complete her graduation and then went on to do several regional films.

In her debut Hindi film, Nishaant, in 1975, Smita was pitted against Shabana Azmi. And ever since, she was compared to her (Azmi). After Nishaant, Shabana's mentor, Shyam Benegal cast Smita as the harijan woman in 'Manthan', in 1976 and in 1977, in 'Bhumika' where she played the true life character of a complexed film actress. She won several major awards for her performances. However, it was only after her blazing performances in 'Chakra', in 1980 that Smita found herself being offered the cream of roles from both art and commercial filmmakers. She even bagged coveted roles with Amitabh Bachchan in `Namak Halal` and 'Shakti'.

However, in Mahesh Bhatt's 'Arth', though Smita moved Amitabh and Kamal Hassan enough to congratulate her on a fine performance, Shabana with her sympathetic role stole the show. But, Smita became one of the three most saleable heroines of '84 -'85 with films like 'Ardh Satya', 'Aaj Ki Aawaz', 'Aakhir Kyon?', 'Mirch Masala' and 'Subah'. Unfortunately, Smita Patil passed away within days of giving birth to her son Prateik in 1986.
