Drug trafficking, is at Its peak in Europe and Asia. Malaysian intelligent agency and anti-narcotic department is called for assistance by their Indian counterpart. Drug business is headed by Singhania (Rajesh Khattar) but main brain is Don (Shah Rukh Khan). He lives life on the edge. He is fearless, cunning and ruthless with not many friends but only enemies. DCP D'silva (Boman Irani) captures Don and puts him in a secret place. Then he puts his plan in action. A lookalike of Don, Vijay is polished and planted in Don's gang. There he gets help from Roma (Priyanka Chopra) and Jasjit (Ar)un Rampal) who is ,the real father of Vijay's adopted son.

It is the season of remakes. The best of makers are going for remakes of old hits. Here one of the most talentecl ,directors of the younger generation 'Farhan Akhtar has decided to go for DON. Remakes bring with them an extra dose of burden of expectations: And that's unfair. As we Indians have always a soft corner for old things in every profession. Old DON though wasn't exactly a classic film. but surely, was well ahead of its time as far as presentation was concerned. It was also a big hit at the box office. A generation brought up on film's dialogue "Don Ko Gyarah Mulkon Ki Police Dhoond Rahi Hai Par Don Ko Pakadna Mushkil Hi Nahi, Namumkin Hai". It became a cult , film for the younger generation in those days. So it is natural that in comparison the new DON was more difficult. Amitabh was reaching towards superstardom when DON came. So he brought In a rare energy and passion to the role. While this generation's superstar Shah Rukh has played truly magniflcient inning and is at the fag end of his career.

Amitabh had nothing to lose enacting DON. Shah Rukh had nothing to gain enacting DON. Despite his best efforts Shah Rukh looks tired. After a long time he has acted in an out and out action film but the passion and energy of BAAZIGAR and DARR are simply missing.

Farhan has missed the bus as far as story telling is concerned. The audience doesn't go with DON's character. The film should be trimmed by some 15 minutes in the second half. Arjun Rampal's track is not convincing enough. However to be fair to Farhan Akhtar he has managed to come up with a slick Hollywood-style product with breathtaking action and chase scenes. It's a good example of more of form and less of content. Climax though has shock value but is abrupt for mainstream cinema.

Production values are of very high standards. Hats off to producers for spending money like water. Technically a very polished product. Script Is not convincing. Dialogues are good. Musically not upto the mark. Cinematography is brilliant. Action is breathtaking.

Choreography could have been better. Performance wise Shah Rukh Khan tries his best and even though he looks tired, gives his best shot to Don's character, but falls short as Vijay. May be it has a lot to do with characterisation. Priyanka Chopra is graceful. Boman Irani doesn't suit as police officer. Kareena Kapoor is no match to Helen. ArJun Rampal does an average Job. Om Puri Is a let down. Isha Koppikar is okay.

Directorially Farhan Akhtar gives more attention to technique than form. At the box office it has more chances in metro cities and multiplexes.
