Dhoom 2 Movie Review

November 24, 2006

To fully enjoy a Bollywood movie, it is usually recommended that you leave your brains behind at home. With Dhoom 2 we certainly recommend that. In fact it would help if you're a little less intelligent than most people or even outright daft. Dhoom 2 is so full of impossibilities. It makes even Santa and Superman look believable. Implaussible stunts and chase sequences make up this caper. Hrithik Roshan plays 'Aryan' , the international thief who steals priceless treasures from across countries. He has Jay Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) on his tail apart from Shonali Bose (Bipasha Basu) and Ali (Uday Chopra). Sunehri (Aishwarya Rai) is Hrithik's partner in crime.

The movie is mostly focussed on Aryan (Hrithik Roshan), his daredevilry and stunts.

Aishwarya Rai has a tanned look and in some places looks like some of the styling was borrowed from Mansoor Khan's 'Josh'.

Bipasha Basu looks stunning with her well toned body. She wears many dare bare costumes including the much looked forward to, bikini, and carries them all well.
Bipasha Basu puts Aishwarya Rai in the shade although the two have no scenes together. Bipasha Basu plays a double role with one for Abhishek and the other for Uday Chopra.

For obvious reasons, Uday Chopra has a lot of screen time in this movie and has some scenes specially written for him apart from a couple of songs. He steals the show from Abhishek Bachchan more than once.

Abhishek Bachchan with his badly trimmed beard and his five and a half expressions doesn't leave much of an impact. The last five minutes of the movie clearly looks like an afterthought to boost his image.

There's more form than content. Hrithik and Aishwarya appear more like manequins mouthing lines.

Many scenes drag. The movie is clearly split into many items like Sanjay Gadhvi said in an interview to Rediff.com recently, on the lines of Manmohan Desai's movies. On one hand there's a lot of technical wizardry at play and on the other, the action scene that is Abhishek's entry looks very 80s.

Abhishek Bachchan's character mouths gems like 'Chor ko sirf chori karte hue pakda ja sakta hai..na uske pehle..na uske baad'. 'You can catch a thief only when he's in the process of stealing, neither before nor after that). Clearly this hair-brained cop never heard of investigations and preventive arrests.

The music hasn't really caught on apparently.

All Yashraj films these days make their previous films look good. Dhoom 2 makes 'Dhoom' appear like a classic. The audience looked bored as they walked out of the cinema. Surprisingly the second show of the day at Fame Adlabs, Andheri wasn't completely sold.

Disappointing fare!
