36, China Town is a suspense thriller or atleast that's what the pitch was. With Abbas Mastan, the men in (off?) white behind this caper, one expected a repeat of Ajnabee. This movie reminds you of Ajnabee with its digs at wives, hints at swapping partners and slapstick comedy but it's more like the director duo trying hard to recreate their own stuff and falling flat.
36 China town is a murder mystery and Akshaye Khanna plays the detective solving the crime. Everyone's a suspect, literally and Akshay Khanna is the man on the move trying to nail the killer. Shahid Kapur plays an aspiring actor called 'Raj Malhotra' and for the nth time tries to do a Shahrukh Khan.
There's a sequence in the movie where a producer asks him to bring money for the movie if he wants to get a break. One wonders if this is a way of explaining the presence of beef cake Upen Patel in the movie?
Patel looks what he is: A gujju boy with a good build. Akshaye Khanna does very well but is hampered by 36 China town's weak script.
Kareena Kapoor is so lousy in some scenes that you think of Sushmita Sen with new respect. Johny Lever is his usual comic self and steals the scenes he has with Paresh Rawal. Paresh Rawal is as dependable as usual but he should work on himself if he wants to appear in swimming trunks and not scare the ladies.
36 China town has an implausible treatment. Kareena and Shahid thrown in jail are shown celebrating a candle light dinner, unaffected by being suspected of murder. The (anti) climax is as old as the hills.
A silly movie. Avoid!
