Raj Babbar

Raj Babbar walked out of Sahara Group and Samajwadi party, clashing with Amar Singh who he called a power broker and resenting the extra importance this group gave to Amitabh Bachchan. And he had a reason for that. It was Raj Babbar who had first supported Sahara group and Subrato Roy. Amitabh at that time was a friend of Rajiv Gandhi and then joined Congress officially.

Now, Raj Babbar has formed his own party, is doing films (Corporate is the recent one) and has produced films for his son and daughter.

A stage artiste in Delhi, Raj Babbar was 'discovered' by Prakash Mehra and was even signed for 'Namak Halal', and later, for `Shakti', but was dropped at the last moment. It was left to B R Chopra to introduce Raj Babbar in a totally negative but very noteworthy role in 'Insaaf Ka Tarazu' (1980). Babbar, however, did not remain confined to negative characters and played a variety of roles in films like 'Nikaah' (1982), 'Mazdoor', 'Naukar Biwi Ka' (1983)and 'Aaj ki Awaaz' (1984), besides nondescript films like 'Poonam' and 'Prem Geet' (1981).

He fell in love with Smita Patil during 'Bheegi Palkein' (1982) and they did several films together: 'Kanoon Meri Muthi Mein', 'Pet, Pyar aur Paap' and 'Shapath' (1984), 'Hum Do, Hamare Do', 'Jawaab' and 'Mera Ghar, Mere Bache' (1985), 'Teesra Kinara' (1986) and 'Waaris', which was released two years after her death.

Though married to Nadira Babbar, Raj Babbar got married again, to Smita. Though there were protests from his first wife Nadira, who had supported him during his Delhi days, Babbar stood his ground. The scandal died down after Smita prematurely died, giving birth to his child, a son.

Babbar's other films include 'Salma' (1985), 'Jhoothi' (1986) and 'Sansar' (1987). The Babbars also produced 'Karamyodha' (1992). Babbar entered politics and for some time, was very close to the then Prime Minister, VP Singh. Then he shifted his interests. He has since divided his time between films and politics.
