A chance meeting with Walli Saab, a well-known scriptwriter, at a paan shop, paved Pran's entry into films. He was offered the villain's role in D.N Pancholi's Punjabi film, 'Yamla Jat'. Pran, who was at that time a photographer's assistant, accepted the film for Rs 50. The film was a great success and in 1942, he was signed to play the hero opposite Noorjehan in Pancholi's, 'Khandaan'. With the success of 'Grihasti' in 1948 he was type-cast in villainous roles. in 1956 established him as one of the top villains to watch out for. Versatility was
his forte. He played several memorable characters like the zamindar in 'Madhumati', the pimp in 'Adalat' and the cheat in 'Tumsa Nahin Dekha'.
Pran continued to play the bad man in most big budget films till Manoj Kumar cast him for a good man's role in 'Upkaar', in 1967 where he played the hero's cynical supporter, Malang Baba. Later, Pran even turned to comedy. In 1972, he did 'Victoria No. 203' with Ashok Kumar and had the audience in splits.Ultimately, he veered to playing character roles, like the large-hearted Pathan in 'Zanjeer', the father of 'Amar Akbar Anthony' and the matchmaker in 'Kasauti'. Although the competition for villainous roles became strong with time, Pran continues to act in films. In recent times, this 80 years old actor has eased on working.
