Premnath,an ex-army man, was signed by his brother-in-law Raj Kapoor for 'Barsaat' in 1949. He became a star overnight. Soon, he was signed as a hero opposite Madhubala, whom he loved and lost, and Beena Rai, whom he loved and married. But he became most famous playing mean-minded, characters like the cruel prince in 'Aan' in 1952.
In 1970, Vijay Anand cast him as the villain in 'Jonny Mera Naam'. Premnath made a tremendous impact as the psychotic pervert in the film and he became the higest-paid villain. With films like 'Roti, Kapda aur Makaan' and 'Bobby', he fuelled his eccentric screen image with similar behaviour offscreen too.
