Moushumi Chatterji, the girl from Bengal, is a rare example of a married actress becoming a successful heroine. 'Balika Bodhu' in Bengali, was remade as 'Anuraag' (1972) in Hindi and began her story.
Married to Hemant Kumar's son Ritesh Mukherji, (popularly known as Babu), Moushumi went on to do scores of films as a heroine with Vinod Mehra ('Us Paar', 'Do Jhooth', 'Sab Se Bada Rupaiya'), Rajesh Khanna ('Bhola Bhala'), Amitabh Bachchan ('Benaam', Shashi Kapoor ('Anari'), Manoj Kumar ('Roti Kapda aur Makan'), Sunil Dutt ('Umar Qaid'), Sanjeev Kumar ('Vishwasghat', 'Angoor'), Rishi Kapoor ('Zahreela Insaan') and many others.
Her rape-in-the-flour scene in 'Roti Kapda aur Makan' is considered a classic rape scene. Moushumi has a bubbly personality and has always remained in the news because of various link ups. But these link-ups did not affect her marriage in the least.
She continued playing Bhabhi roles in films like Ghayal but soon everyone from her generation was playing character roles earlier being done by the likes of Nirupa Rai and Raakhee. Moushumi is forgotten. In fact, her daughters have been trying to get work in Bollywood without much success.
