If there ever was one multi-talented man in Bollywood, it was Kishore Kumar. He had no formal training in music or singing and yet he went on to become a singing star who later competed with other top playback singers of his era. Initially, as a brother of Ashok Kumar who was employed in Bombay Talkies and famous as the hero of 'Kismet' and 'Mahal' Kishore had few opportunities, but his song 'Qusoor Aap Ka' in 'Bahaar' was a hit and he was made the hero of Vyjyanthimala in 'Ladki'. His uninhibited antics and comedy made this film a success. He sang, yodelled and danced into the hearts of millions in 'New Delhi' and 'Asha'.
With his home production 'Chalti Ka Naam Gadi', he moved into a different league. Films like 'Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein', 'Door Ka Rahi', 'Zameen Aasman', 'Shabash Daddy',and 'Chalti Ka Naam Zindagi' displayed his talent for direction and music direction. More interestingly, the man who could sing, yodel, dance and compose music also made a songless film, 'Door Waadiyon Mein Kahin'. Kishore Kumar the playback singer gave a popular new dimension, singing for Rajesh Khanna and even Amitabh Bachchan (Khaike Paan Banaras Wala).
The man with multiple talents also had multiple marriages to his name. His first marriage with Ruma Devi gave way to Madhubala, for whose sake he embraced Islam. After her death, he had a brief marriage with Yogita Bali and later he settled with Leena Chandavarkar. His son Amit Kumar, (who lives with Leena and his step-brother), tried following in his singing father's footsteps, without much success.
