Few remember that this talented star who now sometimes plays rare mother roles, was discovered by Chetan Anand, who earned an international repute when he made 'Neecha Nagar' with Kamini Kaushal in the lead. She was among the few first educated heroines, being an honours graduate in literature, and was a radio artiste when Anand discovered her. With her next film, 'Jail Yatra' her journey in films continued.
Then came 'Aag', 'Do Bhai', 'Ziddi', 'Nadiya ke Paar', 'Namoona', 'Poonam', 'Shaheed', 'Shabnam', 'Arzoo', 'Jhanjhar', 'Aansoo', 'Biraj Bahu', 'Paras' , 'Shaair', 'Go Daan', 'Anhonee', 'Shor' and many more. If her career as a heroine was at its peak when she played opposite Dilip Kumar in 'Shaheed', Kamini Kaushal started playing mother role with Manoj Kumar's 'Shaheed'. She continued to remain Manoj Kumar's `mother` in almost all of his films! During the 'Shaheed' days her romance with Dilip Kumar was much talked about. Her being married to B S Sood did not stop the tongues from wagging. Interestingly, her husband Sood was her brother-in-law, who she married in typical filmy style after the death of her sister, his first wife.
Kamini is one of the few heroines with a real interest in writing. She has written several stories for children and has also the hobby of puppetry.
