Jitendra

Jeetendra today may be the richest guy in the industry and not even Amitabh Bachchan’s riches may match him. It all is partly because of his money sense and also because of Balaji Films, headed by daughter Ekta Kapoor but a brainchild of Jeetendra.

Today, Jeetendra’s focus is on promoting son Tusshar Kapoor against all the odds including the consistent rejection of the lad at the box office.

He first made his debut with V Shantaram's film, 'Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne' in 1964, co-starring Rajashri. But it was the agility that he displayed as the dancing 'James Bond' in 'Farz' that caught the audience's attention. He was nicknamed the 'Jumping Jack' of Hindi cinema.

His popularity lay in the fact that the audience could easily identify with him, especially in films like 'Jigri' & 'Humjoli' and 'Caravan'. His background, after all, had been familiar. Coming from a poverty-stricken family, Jeetendra would either be roaming the streets with his friends or going to the film studios to supply the imitation jewellery his family dealt in. After V Shantaram gave him a chance to be (heroine) Sandhya's double in 'Navrang' and 'Sehra', he was entranced by the world of films. In the early 70s when Rajesh Khanna reigned, Jeetendra's position was temporarily submerged. But with 'Bidaai' co-starring Leena Chandavarkar, he hit back. Then in order to win both the masses and the classes, Jeetendra started doing bespectacled histrionics, in Gulzar's 'Parichay', 'Khushboo' and 'Kinara'. At the same time, he also extended his base to woo the family audience in films like 'Asha', 'Maang Bharo Sajna' and 'Ek Hi Bhool'.

His Madras films like, 'Himmatwala', 'Mawaali' and 'Tohfa' in the '83-84' phase were great success and Jeetendra shot to the top. But it it couldn't last forever and for a decade now, Jeetendra's career has been on an all-time low. However, despite being in films for more than three decades and doing innumerable films, he is far from dissatisfied with his achievements and he says he'd like to do films as long as he breathes.
