Once she made waves when her marriage with an already married Dharmendra was discussed in Indian parliament, and now she is a Member of the very Parliament. So is Dharmendra. Besides being in active politics and also involved in related activities like `Beautifying Juhu Beach` with the funds allotted to her as an MP, she still works in films. Her successful performance in BR Films’ Baghbaan along with Amitabh Bachchan inspired almost everyone from her generation to make a comeback. |

This, when her daughter Esha Deol is already a hit name, is an interesting phenomenon. Often, she has been told that she appears more beautiful than her daughter. Her beauty continues to figure as an idiom when the likes of Laloo Prasad Yadav promise great roads for Bihar that would be 'as smooth as Hema Malini’s cheeks'.
While Esha has yet to reach the height her mother achieved, and she may fail at that, Ehana too is getting ready to make a debut.
Born on October 16, 1948 at Trichinapalli, Madras, Hema Malini made her debut in 'Sapnon Ka Saudagar', and was touted as the 'Dream Girl'. The label has stuck. A good dancer, Hema went on to become the Number One and remained on the top till she got married to Dharmendra.
The `Basanti tangewalli` of the legendary 'Sholay' is her most memorable, and most parodied performance. Ditto for the double role she did in 'Seeta aur Geeta'. This film was even cloned and Sridevi did a double role on the same lines in 'Chalbaaz'. Among her other more successful films are 'Johny Mera Naam', 'Andaaz' and 'Charas' but she was really appreciated as a sensitive actress in 'Meera', 'Kinara', 'Khushboo', 'Ek Chadar Mailee Si', and in home production As Director 'Sharara'. Hema seemed poised to immortalize herself as the legendary 'Razia Sultan', but Kamal Amrohi who made 'Pakeezah' once, could not repeat the magic.
Hema's marriage to Dharmendra, which was his second, even figured in Parliament, but with her dignified behaviour, she could easily overcome the controversy and emerged as dignified as Nargis. With time, Malini moved on to play some characters, and to direction. After successfully directing 'Nupoor', she spotted a young, fresh TV actor when she made 'Dil Aashna Hai'. The actor was Shah Rukh Khan! Malini is also the editor of 'Meri Saheli', and these days she devotes most of her time to her dance shows.
