Guru Dutt Padukone was born near Bangalore, to middle-class but intellectual parents. So fascinated was he by dance that he joined Uday Shankar's dance academy and in his first film assignment, `Lakharani` in 1945, he was the choreographer. In 1951, Dev Anand, his friend from his days of struggle asked him to direct 'Baazi'. With the success of this film, Guru Dutt became famous.
Soon, Dutt made thrillers like 'Jaal' and 'Aar Paar' and comedies actor like 'Mr and Mrs 55'. His film 'Pyaasa', in 1957, became a huge commercial success. The audience were captivated by his gift for story telling. However, his next film 'Kagaz Ke Phool's' failure left Dutt completely devastated. He agreed to produce 'Chaudavin Ka Chand', in 1960, only to recover the losses made by 'Kagaz Ke Phool'.
For 'Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam', which was set in a nineteenth century Calcutta mansion, Guru Dutt refused to take credit as the director of the film. After seeing the film, Raj Kapoor, was so impressed, he had tears in his eyes. The film was a huge success. Dutt was heart broken, when he learnt that his discovery, Waheeda Rehman was trying to establish her identity by acting in others' films. Guru Dutt was so hurt, he tried to makeup his relationship with his wife, but she refused.
This led to his drowning his sorrows in drink. Finally, when things reached the lowest point, he committed suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping tablets.
