Mughal emperor Jalaluddln Akbar Akbar (Hrithik Roshan) in his aim of becoming the undisputed king of Hlndustan orders several emperors to accept his kingdom. While some accept, others don't. He wants to forge an alliance with Rajput emperor Jodhaa (Aishwarya Rai) daughter of Rajput king Bhamal of Ajmer, who is used as a pawn in the political strategy. However even after marriage Jodhaa does not accept Akbar wholeheartedly. Ultimately Akbar goes on to win her heart.
The film is set in the 16th century when mughal emperor Akbar was on the verge of becoming. It also deals with his love story with Rajput Princess Jodhaa. The film is a mixture of fiction and fact. K. Asif's Mughal-E-Azam remains an all time classic as far as period films are concerned. And to be fair to Ashutosh Gowarikar he has taken great pains capturing the essence of that era. It has a grand canvass, huge landscape, replete with horses, elephants, war scenes, crowds etc.
There are a number of scenes which have been brilliantly canned. Even the romance between Hrithik and Alshwarya is extremely graceful. After DHOOM-2 Hrithik and Aishwarya's screen chemistry works wonders again. In totality, it has turned out to bean honest effort and needs to be patronised. Ashutosh must be complimented for thls brave attempt. However the narrative is long-drawn especially in the first half. The music is also weak.
Production values are out of the world. Technically, superb. The script strays at some places. Dialogue are meaningful and rich. The title song has been picturised innovatlvely on a huge set. Cinematography is first rate. Action is breath-taking. Performancewise, Hrithik Roshan looks every bit of an emperor and has delivered the goods. Aishwarya Ralls apt as the Raput princess. Ila Arun is effective. Sonu Sood is good. Nikitin Dheer leaves an impact, while others lend good support. Directorially Ashutosh Gowarlker has handled the intricate subject adroitly. At the box-office it will do well, considering the formidable star line-up and no opposition.
