A review of the Italian and continental restaurant, Mama Mia Location: Mama Mia is located at the Opera House, in the south of Mumbai.
“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well”, said Virginia Woolf. Delicious food cooked by gourmet cooks can not only fill your stomach with insatiated sensation but also fill your world with immeasurable pleasure. And who knows better about the good food than Mama, herself. “Mama knows it the best,” claims the Italian and continental food restaurant, Mama Mia.
Situated in an apparently run down and dingy place, the restaurant with its exquisite food looks at the expansive ground of Opera House. The restaurant is small and hip, without the conventional sense of richness, resembling a street side Italian café. It is not air-conditioned. Its walls are fashionably made of wooden railings, allowing free flow of natural air.
Though Mama Mia also serves Chinese dishes it is well known for the Italian dishes and the burgers. Pradeepa Rao, 20, a college goer, often hangs out with her friends here and says, ‘This is one Italian restaurant that serves awesome Italian food at such affordable prices.’
The baked pasta dishes, ranging from Rs 60/- to Rs 90/-, are the most sought after dishes of the restaurant. The specialty of the baked pasta dishes lies in the sauce used by the dish, which are neither too creamy nor bland. White sauce, Kansas sauce and creamy sauce are freshly prepared, giving the dish a five star appeal. Golden eye - macroni with hot sauce and American corn - is extremely delicious and is a sumptuous dish to relish. The freshly prepared bread of Mama Mia’s is soft and almost melts in the mouth. The dough used for garlic breads and the buns are kneaded to suit the taste of the respective dishes. The burgers, especially the chicken royal burger- chicken cubes tossed in mayonnaise- are a must for all the food lovers. However the vegetarian burgers are too spicy.
Mama Mia offers a range of vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian Italian salads. The choice of ingredients are conventional, like prawns, tunas, chicken, mushrooms and potatoes but the flavoured sauces, like the horse radish sauce and the cocktail sauce make all the difference to the taste, which is further enhanced by the dressing. The salads make a delightful lunch for the diet freaks. They are filling and cost between Rs 30 to Rs 60/-
Pizzas are the inseparable part of any Italian restaurant; and Mama Mia is no exception. Pizzas of Mama Mia do not offer the usual run of the mill toppings, but use savoury spices and herbs that make their Pizzas unique. Pizza Siciliana, which includes Aubergines, onions and Jalepeno peppers are authentically Italian in nature. One can also choose from a wide variety of veg and non-veg toppings. Vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian pizzas served as 8 inches or 12 inches, are moderately priced.
Mama Mia also offers a range of frankies and subs, moderately spicy and tasty. The restaurant offers a limited variety of desserts, like chocolate mousse and jelly, which are sweet and can make a respectable treat. They are priced reasonably at Rs 20-25/-
A brunch in Mama Mia’s, consisting of a roll, French fries, salad and garlic bread with some barbequed chicken or paneer costs Rs 100.
Mama Mia has excellent staff, who are extremely co-operative and friendly.
Mama Mia delivers food from Cuffe Parade to Prabhadevi, satisfying the Italian appetite of the city goers.
The one reason for recommending the restaurant would inevitably be the Italian baked dishes available at affordable price. One can certainly assure that mama knows the best about food… and cost!
