Type of Diabetes



All cases of diabetes are not the same. Sugar can accumulate in the blood for a gamut of reasons resulting in different types of diabetes. The American Diabetes Association adopted the following classification in 1979.

Type-1, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, and
Type-2, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

There are also two other kinds of diabetes, known as gestational diabetes and secondary diabetes. There is also a special kind of diabetes in India caused by malnutrition. This is called malnutrition-related diabetes.

Gestational Diabetes - This type of diabetes is a temporary form of insulin resistance that usually occurs when a woman is expecting.

Secondary Diabetes - This is used to describe a host of other conditions that can give rise to diabetes.

Malnutrition Related Diabetes Mellitus - A type of Diabetes occuring largely in young malnourished individuals in developing countries
